Strategic IPM Plan for the Western Apple Production Region

The document outlined on this page is now out of date. Please refer to the TFREC-Entomology web site for information.

Strategic IPM Plan for the Western Apple Production Region presents results of a workshop held in Yakima, Washington, November 20-21, 1999. The workshop participants focused on general concerns facing the apple industry and the development of a conceptual framework for a strategic IPM plan to deal with the implementation of the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996 (FQPA). The information presented in this document is the best effort of workshop participants to describe the apple IPM system as it exists and how it is likely to change as FQPA is implemented.

Workshop participants expressed several concerns about the unknown nature of how FQPA will be implemented. These concerns are outlined in the document. Workshop participants also understand that pest management programs are dynamic and subject to change because of changes in a pest's status, appearance of a new pest, changes in pesticide regulations, and availability of new pest management technology. Therefore, this document should not be considered the end-all statement for a strategic IPM plan for apple in the western United States. It does identify research, educational and regulatory issues and areas that should be considered when setting policy or identifying priorities for apple IPM in the western United States.
